Made it to London!

I’m here! I’m really, finally here! And totally jetlagged, haha. It was totally awesome, in addition to getting a direct flight from Toronto last night, I was seated in an exit row, so I had ALL the legroom! Only got a couple hours of sleep though, so now I’m sitting on the slightly chilly patio of a cafe near my hostel sipping coffee and nomming on a traditional English breakfast of eggs, beans, sautéed mushrooms and tomatoes, and potatoes, willing myself not to go check in and nap.

Had my first snafu, though. As I sat down to write this post, I realized that I couldn’t find my Bluetooth keyboard anywhere. I guess I left it in Toronto after I wrote my previous post, sigh. Not a huge deal, it was only $10, but writing this post is definitely slower going.

I got an international SIM card at Heathrow, but I plan on mostly just using WiFi for calls home (Skype), texts (WhatsApp), and internet. I like knowing that if I desperately need to check something online or get lost and am not near wifi, I can still access 3G data. Also, in case I want to meet up with other travelers I meet at hostels, I do have the option to call and text. So far, though, it seems like there’s wifi practically everywhere, though the quality and accessibility isn’t always stellar.

It will take some getting used to having to find my way without Google Maps navigation again. It took me about a half hour of walking around the general area of my hostel to find it. My conclusion: more businesses should put their street numbers on their storefronts! It’s hard to tell if you’re going the right direction when you only see one street number in three blocks!

Kate! Are you planning on coming through Germany? While staying with another American may be slightly against your goal of cultural immersion, you should come and stay with us if you are coming through!

I am planning on coming through Germany! At the moment I only have Berlin and maybe Cologne on my agenda. You’re in Dusseldorf, right? It would be lovely to see you, will have to see if I can make that happen.
